THE AIRCRAFT
The Douglas A-4G Skyhawk was produced as a successor for the Douglas A-1 Skyraider and took flight in 1954. The first delivery of aircraft took place in 1956 with the USN. The USMC obtained theirs 3 months later. Throughout the aircraft's career, the A-4 had many nicknames including the "Tinker Toy" and "Heinemann's Hotrod" after Ed Heinemann the designer. After the hump shape from the electronics on the dorsal spine, the E and F variants were called "Camel". "Scooter" is probably the most famous nickname for the 2,960 A-4s produced aircraft.
ABOUT THE MODEL
The Douglas Skyhawk A-4 Bu 155061 flew its maiden flight in the summer of 1967. In the fall of 1968, the aircraft was transferred to VA-155, and then in 1969 switched to VA-212 during the Vietnam War. The Royal Australian Navy purchased the aircraft in 1971 under the designation N13-155061 and the Royal Australian Navy code 874. The 874 withdrew from service in 1983. In 1984 the aircraft was purchased by New Zealand under NZ6216 and switched to a "K" version. The aircraft was later placed in the Omaka Museum in New Zealand. The A-4G originated from the A-4F and featured new wing-lift spoilers, nose wheel steering, additional weapons options, an ejection seat, and an external in-flight refueling tank.
